School of Koine Greek

Picture
PART OF THE OVERALL EDUCATION OF MY CLASSES INCLUDES A GRASP OF THE BIBLE NEW TESTAMENT GREEK KNOWN AS KOINE ( "COMMON" OR "PEOPLE'S") GREEK

αβγδεζηθικλμνξοπρστυφχψω
24 of 'em; that makes the whole of the Koine Greek alphabet, my friend.

Here are some key Greek words and phrases we will be studying:

αγαπαω -(ah-gah-PAH-oh)  love dearly; a love that surpasses emotion
αμαρτια - (ham - ar - TEE - ah)  - sin
ανθρωπος  - (AN-throw-POSS)    man
αρχη - (ar-KHAY)  beginning
γαρ - (gar) for
εκκλησια - (EK- lay- SEE - ah)  assembly; church
εν -in
θεος - (THAY - oss)  God the Father
και - (rhymes with "eye")  and
νυξ -  (newks)  - night
χαρις - (KAIR - is) - grace

Now, keep this in mind:  η is ETA and not the English letter "n" ; and also remember not to confuse ν (NU) with the English letter "v" ; and while you're at it, don't make the mistake of thinking that ω (OMEGA) is the English letter "w".  You're better than that.

KOINE GREEK POWER WORDS FROM THE BOOK OF HEBREWS

Picture
HEBREWS 2:1 - This verse is referring to the truth about Jesus that we read in the first chapter, mainly that Jesus is not only better than the angels, he is indeed God and He is the salvation of all mankind.  Now, verse one of the second chapter says "We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.(NIV)"  The whole verse in Koine Greek looks like this:

διὰ τοῦτο δεῖ περισσοτέρως προσέχειν ἡμᾶς τοῖς ἀκουσθεῖσιν μήποτε παραρυῶμεν

The two words I've highlighted are the words "προσέχειν" pay attention (prosecho from pros =  toward + echo = to have, hold) means literally "to hold toward" and " παραρυῶμεν" (pararrhueo from pará = by, past, beyond + rhéo = flow) and it means to drift away.  It is interesting that the writer uses these two terms because they are both nautical. Prosecho means to bring a ship into harbor and tie it up safely; you need to be careful in bringing the ship up to the dock and away from other boats, so you need to be constantly alert.  Pararrhueo means to drift past the place of harbor.  Sort of like you forgot to anchor your ship and then went to bed for the night.  When you wake up you find that you've silently moved away from the place of safety.  What Hebrews is telling us is, that if we do not take the plan of salvation through Jesus seriously, we are in great danger of slipping past the harbor of salvation.
